Youth & Elders Storytelling Salon
Youth and elder guest speakers will gather to tell stories about the old days, the new days, and the goods and the bads of each, with a mix of interview questions, storytelling, and “hey that reminds me of a story.”

For the first time, the annual Elder Salon is inviting youth to share their experiences so young and old can learn a thing or two. We’ll have tales from our nvited guests for most of the evening, and then we’ll turn the tables, and encourage the audience to share some stories and experiences together over light refreshments.

Stories of coming out, stories of staying in, stories of loves found and lost and found again, stories of families biological and.. just logical, all these story threads weave the rich tapestry describing our community current and past.

All are welcome, whether you have a story to tell or not.

This is a free event with admittance on a first come, first served with provincially mandated site capacities being strictly adhered to. This event will take place in the All Ages zone on site.

Pride Film Night: I Am Gay & No Ordinary Man
I Am Gay
(10 minutes)
After working abroad for five years, filmmaker Ajahnis Charley returns home to Oshawa, Ontario, in the age of quarantine. In addition to reuniting with his family, he returns with a mission to share some deep personal truths. Surprising conversations ensue with his mother and three siblings creating, in this humorous and heart-wrenching story about our need to seek love and acceptance within our own families.

DIRECTOR: Ajahnis Charley
PRODUCER: Lea Marin

No Ordinary Man (84 minutes)
For decades, the life of American Jazz musician Billy Tipton was framed as the story of an ambitious woman passing as a man in pursuit of a music career. In NO ORDINARY MAN, Tipton’s story is re-imagined and performed by trans artists as they collectively paint a portrait of an unlikely hero. Together, the filmmakers join Tipton’s son Billy Jr. to reckon with a complicated and contested legacy: how do you tell the story of someone who was hiding in plain sight yet desperate to be seen? NO ORDINARY MAN features leading voices in the trans community, including Marquise Vilsón, Scott Turner Schofield, Susan Stryker, C.Riley Snorton, and Thomas Page McBee, among others.

Pivot Nova Scotia Webinar: Barriers to 2S/LGBTQIA+ Healthcare and Creating Meaningful Community Engagement with Nova Scotia Health
Pivot Nova Scotia is a community-based 2S/LGBTQIA+ health leadership program that provides community members with the tools to create systemic changes in our healthcare system. The Pivot NS 2020 cohort recently completed their systems change project to assess clinic competency in 2S/LGBTQIA+ healthcare throughout the province. This webinar will consist of Pivot leaders sharing insights gathered from the analysis of data provided by clinics, as well as the systemic barriers encountered that prevent meaningful engagement between the 2S/LGBTQIA+ community and health providers. Future recommendations will be discussed, specifically around what inclusive care looks like and how to improve Nova Scotia Health’s outdated communication system. Community members and health providers are encouraged to attend this event as perspectives from each of these groups are essential for the implementation of these solutions.

Pride Film Night: Sometimes I Wish I Was On a Desert Island & Someone Like Me
Sometimes I Wish I Was On a Desert Island(10 minutes)
As the world learns to live again in the midst of the pandemic, for many Arabic-speaking LGBTQ+ people living in Montreal, this is just a period of time like any other. When you’ve fled homophobic violence in your home country and endured a painful migratory journey, or you still face social prejudices stemming from intercultural and intergenerational conflicts, surviving social isolation is nothing new.
WRITER: Eli Jean Tahchi
DIRECTOR: Eli Jean TahchiPRODUCER: Pierre-Mathieu Fortin

Someone Like Me(80 minutes)
In Sean Horlor and Steve J. Adams’ feature doc Someone Like Me, Drake, a young gay man from Uganda, leaves behind everything he knows to attain the universal freedoms everyone deserves: to be who he is and love whomever he chooses without fear of discrimination, persecution, or violence. A group of queer strangers unite to resettle Drake in Vancouver, but they are tasked with a year-long commitment to someone they’ve never met, and struggle with the challenging conditions of this support. Together, Drake and his sponsors embark on an emotional journey in search of personal freedom, revealing how in a world where one must constantly fight for the right to exist, survival itself becomes a victory.
